چکیده

The paper describes the experiences of Dräger Medical Technology in the ESPRIT project PROFES (PROduct Focussed improvement For Embedded Software processes). Dräger has participated as an application provider (industry partner) in the PROFES project and has implemented a software process improvement programme with the goal to improve product quality in the main areas of product reliability, fitness for use, and predictability of quality, time and cost. The paper describes the improvement programme from goal setting, via implementation of process changes, to evaluation of the results. The methods used in the improvement programme are goal oriented measurement (GQM) and software process assessment (BOOTSTRAP). Dräger has realised a tremendous improvement in process maturity through the course of the PROFES project (from Bootstrap level 1.50 to 2.75 in less than one and a half year). The paper will address the environmental factors that have facilitated this outstanding improvement in such a short time. The paper will focus on hands-on experience with the PROFES method in an industry partner and will, as such, have a significant contribution to the exploitation of the PROFES method in the industry.

Product Focused Process Improvement: Experiences of Applying the PROFES Improvement Methodology at DRÄGER

In this paper the principles and contents of a new product characteristics driven improvement methodology for embedded systems and product development (PROFES) is introduced. The paper includes also experiences of application of the methodology in practice. The methodology was recently developed in an ESPRIT Project called PROFES (PROduct Focused improvement of Embedded Software processes). The...

Product focused SPI in the embedded systems industry

Software specific problems have been handled in the software community through focusing on the software process, and continuous improvement of that software process. However, the contribution of software process improvement (SPI) to product quality has not been proven yet. The PROFES project customised successful approaches into one embedded systems specific SPI methodology focused on improving...

The Role of GQM in the PROFES Improvement Methodology

In the ESPRIT project PROFES (PROduct-Focused Improvement of Embedded Software processes) a goaldriven process improvement methodology been developed that combines and enhances methods like goaloriented measurement, product assessment, process assessment, and process modelling. So far, the PROFES improvement methodology has been applied in multiple projects at three industrial embedded software...

A Typed Generic Process Model for Product Focused Process Improvement

The motivation behind the idea of product focused process improvement is to make a process improvement program address certain product quality features in an explicit manner. The PROFES methodology [PROFES (2001)] describes such an improvement program through the notion of a PPD (Product-Process Dependency) repository. The typed generic process model (TGPM) [Satpathy (2000)] is a parametric tem...

Establishing Product Process Dependencies in SPI

One of the basic assumptions behind most software process improvement methods is that improved processes lead to improved product quality. Despite the popularity of SPI methods, there is a lack of both methods and experience reports on the explicit relationship between software process improvement (SPI) and product improvement. PROFES is a methodology that helps to shift from generic process im...
